Appealing or appalling? Concrete palaces at the Lido, Funchal, Madeira.
It’s hard to see a unifying theme for the architecture of the Estrada Monumental district around Funchal Lido, Madeira. Or maybe it’s blindingly obvious: profit. The municipality provide a promenade and gardens which mitigate only slightly the brutality of the concrete palaces; and look good on the websites. The older blocks closer in tried slightly harder, there’s more detail and something approaching an architectural conversation. But overall it’s the architecture of profit, privilege, and exclusion.
