Sunset at Funchal, Madeira at the end of my day which started with a minicab journey to Gatwick before dawn amid the freezing frost. The flight was efficient and even landed early. So far so good.

Unfortunately the car hire company decided to offer me a complimentary upgrade to a car rather larger than I had booked, even more unfortunately it was an offer I couldn’t refuse as they didn’t actually have a small car. An hour later and lots of smiles and it was sorted out for a swap tomorrow.
So here we have my photos of the sunset over the Atlantic from Funchal, the views from the 580 m. sheer cliff from the Miradouro do Cabo Girã, looking back at Funchal, the other horizon is water all the way to America.
A big change from the grey skies of London, worth the bother of the journey in the frost via the pale dawn of the stratosphere above Hampshire shortly after takeoff for the colour rush of the subtropical flowers of Madeira.
But it’s not all paradise here. The restaurant that promised a 10% discount but didn’t manage to put it on the bill, I met a woman in the hotel lift whose husband had collapsed because he had drunk too much and the “authentic Madeira cuisine” restaurants whose menus include pasta and pizza. But I’m here for the the colourful flowers, the volcanic geology plus the really nice cake shops and the quirky beach bars. Hopefully more of that tomorrow.
