Permitted exercise walk to Wimbledon Common, about 60 metres of altitude up from the Thames at Putney Bridge. This is a route on foot out from my home which I used to run years ago. The car parks are closed during the lockdown but plenty of other walkers out there conscientiously keeping the two metre distance whilst enjoying the sunshine and openness and lack of sense of confinement. Maybe also with hopes of the mythical regenerative power of the green forest.
Never mind the charming Wombles, the holly and green undergrowth and the greensward clearings of Wimbledon Common seem to me a possible setting of the challenges to Sir Gawain by the Green Knight of the medieval poem Sir Gawayn and þe Grene Knyȝt.
My challenge on this hike is a 3 litre milk bottle filled with water in that rucksac, just not to get out of practice.
