Photos of Marseille on the 1st September 2014, the day of the French return to work, la rentrée scolaire. The summer holidays are over and the beaches are empty but the sky is still clear blue and the sun shines still strongly though most people are now back at work or preparing for the new school term. The strong light continues to contrast between textures and colours from the natural world and those imposed by mankind. Perhaps even more so as the layer of humanity has vanished overnight. The crisp hard Provence dawn horizon shows the line between the concrete world below and the infinite aspirations of the skies, symbolically contrasting reality and dreams in a way which parallels the return to the reality of work from the dreams of holidays.
