These striking landscapes offer a vision of a post-apocalyptic dystopia around the lac-de-Castillon of the river Verdon in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
The tree stumps and buildings that have been revealed are encrusted with a particularly fine mud whose lack of colour contrasts vividly with the normal landscape in the autumn sunshine. A metal raft and some industrial buildings of unclear purpose contrast with the skeleton of a wig-wam, hinting at the breakdown of ordered society.
The catastrophe occurred over a quarter of a century ago when this remote valley was flooded after the construction of a dam across the river Verdon. All that has actually happened recently is that the water level has been lowered for maintenance, which shows the devastation wrought by the flood.
