Pont de Caronte, Martigues

Pause in my afternoon’s ride out from Marseille along the Côte Bleu and back along the Étang de Berre,

Martigue’s Pont de Caronte was completed in 1915, it’s a huge railway swing bridge which takes two lines of railway over the Canal de Caronte, which links the Étang de Berre with the Mediterranean. Each span of the movable section is over 50 m. in length and the railway track is about 25 m. above the water. The Pont de Caronte was dynamited in 1944 but reinstated in 1946.
The canal quay beneath makes an ideal set for movies and the light can be fantastic so it’s hardly surprising that numerous movie scenes have been shot here.
The Gilets jaunes actions continue here and so far I have been unable to find petrol to refill my tank.
