One of the really satisfying days out hiking. Dawn start in London, fast train to Penrith, then a hike deep in to the valley of the Glenderaterra Beck, which runs between Skiddaw (931 m.) and Blencathra (868 m.) before contributing to the River Greta, which runs to Keswick in the Northern Lakes. There’s a ford near the ruins of the Brundholme Mine workings (they were extracting galena for its lead content), then a steep climb up to the path opposite.
Coming out of the hills, the path suddenly opens out to a wide panorama encompassing the Eden Valley, Helvellyn (950 m.), Derwent Water and over to Great Gable (899 m.) and Scafell (978 m.) before reaching the familiar paths of Latrigg (368 m.).
