My Yew hedge in Keswick

Now the weather is back to the Cumbrian Cloud Forest climate and the heatwave is a distant nightmare, I set about tackling a Yew hedge that must be at least as old as the house. A previous gardener trained the young tree to be a hedge, like laying a thorn hedge around a field. Subsequent gardeners have let it sprawl, almost to the point of collapse.

This Yew seems able to regrow down the branch, not just at the tips, so there is some hope that pruning will provoke new growth nearer the main trunk. But not just pruning, I was able to persuade the thick old branches to hold the smaller, newer branches in a better shape.
Yew grows slowly so for a time there is a gap, facing southwest and sheltered, which might be a place to sit out or for a herb garden in pots.
