Driving round the fabulous Assynt coastal road on the peninsular between Lochinver to Kylesku. A huge variety of topography on this 20 mile route: pretty much the complete Scottish smorgasbord. On one side, coastal dunes with silver sand beaches; on the other side: bare granite and freshwater lochs with views up to Quinag, that I summited yesterday on foot.
The road draws through wooded valleys at the Kylesku end; following a community buyout in 1993, the Assyt peninsular is particularly strong on nature conservation, parts are described as an “ecosystem restoration project”.
