Prospect Cottage and garden, Dungeness, by Derek Jarman (1942-1994)
My walk around the cottages, shacks and industrial relics on the shingle beach which create the ambience of this apparently remote corner of Kent.
Dungeness village sits on a shingle beach that’s on the English Channel. Derek Jarman, the radical poet and filmmaker, established his home and garden here away from the modern world (although within earshot of Dungeness nuclear power stations). Walking along the beach on a hot sunny day amongst the relics of the fishing industry, the charm and apparent remoteness of Dungeness Beach are easily endearing but the I wouldn’t be so sure in the winter: it must be bleak.
