End of year lunch with the French bike club AMA getting together in the deepest Camargue; friends coming in from Nîmes to Nice, enjoying the Camargue wildlife on the way: flamingos, herons, black bulls and white horses, and all in very fringe 4G coverage. But for a fantastic traditional meal of Provencal specialities with a wood fire burning bright in the corner of the old barn that’s now a family-run restaurant.
I enjoyed a warm Camembert with walnut salad followed by Gardiane de taureau with local Camargue rice. Pascal had Caviar of aubergines followed by a Bavette de taureau, cooked à point moins. Taureau (or toro) is the meat of the black bulls farmed in the Camargue, it’s darker and more dense than ordinary beef.
The restaurant has a crib with clay figures, the traditional Provencal santons sharing coloured lights with a small Christmas tree. Talk of course about next year’s plans, including the GLME Summercamp at Vielha in the Pyrenees, which will be hosted by AMA.
Great company, great food in a great location.
